Cannonvale Medical Centre Water Treatment System post Cyclone Debbie

Wednesday, 19 April 2017

Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie made landfall near Airlie Beach on the Nth QLD coast 28th March 2017. It was a slow-moving category 4 system that generated wind gusts exceeding 160 km/hr, heavy rainfall and storm surges along the Nth QLD coastline. 27 hours later, after having tracked inland over Airlie Beach, Proserpine, Cannonvale and Collinsville it was downgraded to a Tropical Low. Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Proserpine Branch is again open for business.

Cannonvale was amongst the hardest hit regions during Cyclone Debbie, so it was no surprise to Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Proserpine Branch to hear Queensland Health had been advised they couldn't be guaranteed potable water supply to their Whitsunday Community Health Centre located in Cannonvale immediately after Cyclone Debbie.

Luckily Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Head Office in Mackay had a portable Ultrafiltration Treatment System available, capable of supplying up to 70,000 litres of potable water per day. Queensland Health and the Whitsunday Community Health Centre in Cannonvale instructed Dowdens Pumping to supply/install the unit immediately on a temporary 'Hire' agreement in-case all mains water supply was lost.

There were two water sources available at the time - the mains water supply or bore water from the Proserpine Hospital. Queensland Health instructed Dowdens to connect the UF Treatment System to the bore water supply, in an effort to remain as self-sufficient as possible post-Cyclone Debbie.

PURION - Water Treatment Products by the Dowdens Group

Dowdens Pumping have previously completed numerous bore water filtration systems treating bore water with our own brand of PURION Iron Removal Filters, so this emergency UF Treatment System was quick and easy to install. PURION Iron Removal Filters pre-treat the bore water before running it through the Ultrafiltration System which then doses the filtrate with liquid chlorine to further disinfect.

Once treated Dowdens Pumping manually transported numerous loads of the potable water from the Proserpine Hospital (where the UF System was installed) directly to the Whitsunday Community Health Centre in Cannonvale, where it was stored in a potable water grade storage tank. The treated water was then used to supply the medical centre. The entire supply/installation and commissioning was successfully completed on Saturday 1st of April - only 4 days after Cyclone Debbie had hit.

If you are ever in need of potable water during a storm or emergency contact Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment. Dowdens only require access to a reasonable source of water (bore, dam, creek) and power (generator or mains power) and we can guarantee same day potable water supply, in any situation!

Dowdens Grundfos RSI Solar Pumping System

Details:

The existing pump that Dowdens replaced was an old line shaft MONO pump that was operated by Diesel engine. The installation of the new Grundfos solar system lowered ongoing maintenance and operation costs considerably as the clients no longer had to replace the column due to the accumulation of rust. To ensure this wouldn't happen again Dowdens utilised stainless steel and poly pipe in the construction.

Operating costs were lowered via the system utilising a Grundfos Invertor with Sine Wave Filter Isolation Switch together with a tank level pressure switch - meaning the pump would start and stop automatically, only when needed. This automatic operation eliminated the need for the client to regularly drive to the bore to start and stop the pump. This increased pumping efficiency also saved on the overall cost of diesel to refuel the pump. The Grundfos Invertor with Sine Wave Filter Isolation Switch, together with the Grundfos SP7-17 415V Submersible Borehole Pump were pre-wired on a custom-fabricated steel mounting frame to enable easy 'plug & play' installation. Dowdens supplied 5km of poly pipe for both the tank fill line and the gravity feed lines.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Rockhampton branches design philosophy for this project was: Cost Effectiveness - Innovation - Ease of Installation - Simple & Effective Pump Operation - System Reliability & Reduced Ongoing Maintenance. The entire Grundfos RSI Solar Pumping System was designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned on time and within budget.

Game changing GRUNDFOS SCALA2 PUMPS now at Dowdens

Tuesday, 14 March 2017

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment are your local pump experts and are Authorised Grundfos MASTER DEALERS. Dowdens are Mackay's ONLY Authorised Grundfos MASTER DEALERS & Dowdens Rockhampton branch is also an Authorised Grundfos MASTER DEALERS. Grundfos pumps are market leaders, committed to providing new and innovative products that take comfort and simplicity to the next level, for these reasons we sell and recommend the new SCALA2 domestic pump.

Grundfos has long been regarded for their high quality and reliable pumps. The Grundfos SCALA2 takes design innovation, comfort and simplicity to the next level and is set to be a game changer in domestic boosting. The NEW Grundfos SCALA2 is a robust, fully integrated, self-priming pump suitable for use from both above and below ground water sources. The compact system features a pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive and non-return valve in one compact unit that is quick and easy to install.

The SCALA2 is an energy efficient pump featuring an integrated speed controller that ensures constant water pressure regardless of variations in demand or inlet pressure. For those living in areas of poor power supply or those that are sometime affected by power outages, the SCALA2 can also be run on a generator, due to its ability to be able to handle varying voltages.

The variable speed controller also matches the power consumption with the required water output, which also helps to conserve energy and reduce your energy bills. To protect the pump and help ensure a long life, the SCALA2 includes a range of protective features. Dry run protection automatically stops operation when the water source runs out, to help prevent damage, and the anti-cycling feature detects any unnatural cycling and alerts the user via the protection indicator on the control panel.

Another unique benefit of the SCALA2 is its quiet operation, thanks to the permanent magnet motor and water cooling technology. The high efficiency motor is significantly quieter than traditional speed-controlled motors and the SCALA2 is cooled by the water it pumps, eliminating the need for a noisy fan. This makes the SCALA2 one of the quietest domestic boosting pumps currently available on the market.

For ease of selection, the SCALA2 suits most domestic pressure boosting applications and is capable of supplying water for small single level homes up to larger multi-storey homes.

35 bar Pressure Reducing Valve Station

Case Study

Customer: Anglo American - Moranbah North Coal Mine

Location: Moranbah, QLD

Specifications & Features:

Anglo American Moranbah North Coal Mine

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Mackay branch were engaged by longstanding customer Anglo American (Moranbah North Coal Mine Site) to deliver an innovative valve system that could help maintain the safe and reliable delivery of general purpose & fire water services to their ever-expanding underground mining operations. With growing demand for reliable water flow & pressures at ever-increasing operating depths, Dowdens decided it was time to design & produce a new generation 35 bar Dual Pressure Control Station, expanding our range of standardised pressure reducing valve stations.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment fabricate and fit out a range of standardised pressure reducing valve stations, but this station required a higher pressure rating not available with our standard 'off the shelf' systems that are available in 16 / 25 bar (35 / 40 bar rated systems are built to order). Dowdens have manufactured these products for many years to help our resource industry customers arrest any water pressure spikes and/or surges in pipe systems and to aid these mines operating within and remaining fully complaint with Queensland Government Mine Site Compliance legislation, standards & guidelines.

This new Dual Pressure Control Station has been built to optimise plant reaction speeds, allow for greater operating ranges from between 2 - 35 bar and is manufactured with high-quality, reliable and readily available components. The design needs for the new Dual Pressure Control Station were borne primarily from Dowdens detailed underground observations of hydraulic occurrences within the mines existing water network. Working closely with the mines water infrastructure operators Dowdens were able to engineer, manufacture and deliver a product that increased the reliability of their mine water supply systems and assist with premeditated preventative maintenance routines.

All design, fabrication, installation & commissioning of the 35 bar Pressure Reducing Valve Station was undertaken by Dowdens Mackay's in-house Engineering, Fabrication & Workshop Departments. With a history of successful installations over the past 20 years throughout the Queensland Mining Sector Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment have the ability to expertly design / manufacture / install and commission specialised pumping and water treatment solutions that are built primarily in-house & onsite to our client's specific unique requirements. Dowdens dedicated departments of industry trained engineers, draftsmen, project managers, sales staff and tradespeople including fitters, mechanics, polywelders, machinists, plumbers, electricians and boiler makers enable us to offer an unmatched range of world-class engineering solutions for any type of fluid handling project. We truly are Queensland's premier 'one-stop-shop' for pumping and water treatment systems!

Moranbah North Coal Mine - 35 bar Pressure Reducing Valve Station

Details:

At this projects inception Dowdens visited site to examine and document the specific operating requirements. After initial observations it was concluded that a wider operating range would be required for effective control of both the High and Low Flow demands and a higher adjustment range - meaning the standard Dowdens 25 bar Pressure Reducing Valve Station needed to be modified to suit this application. This higher pressure is not normally encountered with Queensland underground mine water supply systems so unique and customised hydraulic control layouts, pilots & hardware were seamlessly incorporated into the build by the Dowdens Mackay Workshop and Project Engineers.

This projects entire design, manufacture, installation & commissioning process was completed on budget and within a tight timeline of 4 weeks set by the customer.

Coppabella Township Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade

Case Study

Customer: Aurizon Holdings Limited

Location: Coppabella, QLD

Specifications & Features:

Aurizon Holdings Limited

Following on from the successful construction and commissioning of the Coppabella Water Treatment Plant Aurizon Holdings Limited engaged Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Mackay & Brisbane Branches] to deliver a much needed Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) Upgrade at their Coppabella Township, located on the Goonyella Rail Corridor (the world's largest metallurgical coal rail system) - 159 kilometres South West of Mackay, QLD. The Coppabella STP Upgrade project entailed the addition of an Ultra-Filtration (UF) 'Polishing' Plant onto the existing STP. Dowdens new UF 'Polishing' Plant can produce up to 180 kL/day of treated Class A effluent.

The township of Coppabella was primarily designed and built to service the junction of two railway lines (one from Goonyella Coal Mine and one from Saraji Coal Mine) and to provide accommodation to the regions coal mine workers in work depots. The town is wholly owned and operated by Aurizon Holdings Limited and contains: stations, residences, single-quarters, work depots, hotel, a shop, swimming pool, football oval, caravan park, school, ambulance, fire brigade, the recently completed Dowdens whole-of-town Water Treatment Plant and of course the upgraded Sewage Treatment Plant which is now capable of producing 180kL of treated Class A effluent per day for above ground irrigation applications. The local Coppabella Golf Course is one area where this treated effluent is used for irrigation.

After successfully completing various projects for Aurizon Holdings Limited, Dowdens won the tender to provide the process design together with equipment supply, civil construction, installation, commissioning and training for the STP plant operators. The construction phase of the project began with extensive civil works being undertaken to raise the ground level for the new STP components. The pre-existing STP has historically been subject to flooding during heavy rainfall events due to the sites proximity to the local creek. Upon surveying the sites substrate a water table was discovered 1m below ground level.

Working with local Civil Engineers Cardno a substantial foundation was designed / laid to ensure the new buildings, plant components and 4,000 tonne water tank would be stable and remain above the flood plain even during heavy rainfall. Once foundations were laid Dowdens began construction of the 400,000L lined stainless steel water tank, new building to properly house the STP process equipment, an operators office, laboratory facilities and a back-up generator used to power the entire STP in the event of power loss.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment Coppabella Township Sewage Treatment Plant Upgrade [Coppabella, QLD]

Details:

After extensive effluent testing and thorough examination of the existing STP process a UF 'Polishing' Plant was designed by Dowdens inhouse Water Treatment Engineering Dept. capable of processing up to 180kL of partially treated sewage effluent per day. The partially treated sewage effluent was rated as Class C and needed to be treated to an acceptable level (Class A) to then be used for above ground irrigation. This treatment process consists of three stages of filtration and sterilisation, including UF. This three-stage process runs as follows:

  • Primary treated effluent from the existing STP (Class C quality) is transferred to a 45,000L Glass Media Filtration (GMF) feed tank via duty / stand-by submersible pumps on demand.
  • In Stage 1 the clarified effluent from the existing STP process is first dosed with sodium hypochlorite as primary disinfection, to reduce biofouling of the Glass Media. It is then passed through the duty/stand-by Glass Media Filters which reduce particulates, suspended solids and turbidity from the GMF filtrate stream. This ensures no large particles damage the UF membranes in Stage 2.
  • In Stage 2 the GMF filtrate is then passed through UF treatment process which incorporates 5% 'cross-flow' to maximise the filtration run-time between back flushes (triggered by high trans-membrane pressure). The systems consists of 8 individual outside-in PVDF membranes which reduce turbidity to less than 1 NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units) whilst removing any particles greater than 0.0002mm from the permeate stream. The UF feed is again dosed with sodium hypochlorite to assist with cleaning the UF membranes from biological and organic fouling between the backwash and Chemical Enhanced Back Flush (CEBF) cycles.
  • In Stage 3 the UF filtrate is passed through duty/stand-by Activated Carbon Filters (ACF) on demand to reduce colour and odour (by removing aromatic compounds) as a final 'polish' before being fed to the treated effluent tank. The ACF filtrate is then dosed with sodium hypochlorite as a final disinfection of the treated effluent prior to it entering the treated effluent storage tank for dispersal via above ground irrigation systems. Dowdens provided a centralised, custom designed / fabricated, packaged chemical dosing system for this UF 'Polishing' Plant which included a 1000L Chemical Storage tank, a splash-proof racking area housing 5 individual Chemical Dosing pumps - complete with an internal bund and double containment dosing line connections.

When the treated effluent arrives in the 400kL stainless steel tank a recirculation system pumps it through a chlorine analyser and back to the treated effluent tank. The chlorine analyser then controls the residual free chlorine level in the treated water and will start / stop a chemical dosing pump as required to maintain the pre-set residual free chlorine level.

Each of the GMF, UF and ACF processes are periodically backwashed and cleaned, with residual waste being fed to a nearby buffer dam where chlorine is allowed to dissipate. Based on the level in the buffer dam and the level in the treated effluent tank, the water may then be returned to the pump station at the front of the STP for reprocessing.

With a history of successful installations over the past 20 years throughout the Queensland Mining Sector Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment have the ability to expertly design / manufacture / install and commission specialised pumping and water treatment solutions that are built primarily in-house & onsite to client's specific unique requirements. The Coppabella STP Upgrade project is yet another example of Dowdens unparallelled capability to deliver specialised long-term engineered fluid handling solutions from project inception through to final commissioning / handover.

Pressure Setting Spool Piece

Case Study

Customer: Anglo American - Grasstree Coal Mine

Location: Middlemount, QLD

Specifications & Features:

Anglo American - Australia

Anglo American have engaged Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's [Mackay] Engineering Department & Fabrication Workshop to rectify an issue with a new valve station installation that was experiencing water hammer, resulting in the longwall mining operation being suspended at their Grasstree Coal Mine, located at Middlemount in the centre of the Bowen Basin, QLD.

Underground mines require water management systems in place to manage working water that is utilised for production, dust suppression, hydraulic jacks etc. Mines employ various methods of underground water transportation systems including Longwall Boost Pump Stations & filtered water from the mine surface networks. The filtered water system is an important piece of infrastructure for underground coal mine providing clean water for dust suppression & feeding the powerful hydraulic piston pumps that are used to jack up the roof in the longwall mining process.

When water is fed into an underground mine it is received at a very high pressures due to the vertical drop to the mine workings. This pressure needs to be reduced & controlled to levels that can be safely managed in the underground operations. Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment has provided Grasstree Coal Mine with several Pressure Reducing Valve Stations over the life of the mine, enabling reliable & trouble free operation.

Responding to the urgent help request from Grasstree Mine, Dowdens immediately travelled to site to undertake system 'fault finding' & begin planning the delivery of a timely & cost effective solution to the problem.

RAINSPAN High Profile Boom Irrigator

Case Study

Customer: FS Stevens and Co.

Location: Ilbilbie, QLD

Specifications & Features:

RAINSPAN High Profile Soft Hose Boom Irrigator

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Mackay] have delivered yet another High Profile Soft Hose Boom Irrigator to a local Ilbilbie Sugarcane Farmer. Longtime Dowdens customer Brian Stevens operates a number of sugarcane farms in and around Ilbilbie, QLD. Due to lack of rainfall during the 2014/15 growing season, and a desire to lower his overall irrigation costs Brian decided to purchase a RAINSPAN SB2000 High Profile Soft Hose Boom Irrigator to better facilitate the irrigation of his cane.

Wanting to purchase his new irrigator from a dependable Queensland business Brian contacted the Dowdens Mackay Agricultural Sales Team - one of the most experienced Ag sales teams in Australia, with over 125 years of combined irrigation system design and operational experience between them. As a company that has built its foundation on the servicing and development of agricultural pumping systems, Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment have the experience to engineer a solution to suit any agricultural application.

Jeff Roberts from the Dowdens Mackay Agricultural Sales Team visited Brian's farm on a number of occasions to investigate, design and then match an irrigator and irrigation plan to best suit the 121ha property. Taking into consideration the terrain, the farms location (near the coastline - a high wind region), existing pump capabilities and source water availability shortages Jeff suggested Brian purchase a RAINSPAN SB2000 93m High Profile Soft Hose Boom Irrigator.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment - RAINSPAN High Profile Soft Hose Boom Irrigator [Ilbilbie, QLD]

Details:

Sugarcane farmer Brian Stevens had for some time wanted to shift away from high pressure irrigation at his Ilbilbie farm, this was due in part to the high coastal winds the property endures year round playing havoc with his irrigation sprinklers. High pressure irrigation was no longer viable for this particular farm as it equated to water was being blown off crop, Brian's associated pumps working hard to deliver high pressure source water to existing soft hose irrigators and excessive mains power being consumed to run said pumps.

Moving from high pressure sprinklers to a low pressure RAINSPAN SB 2000 Dowdens has been able to deliver Brian considerable savings with his overall irrigation costs. The RAINSPAN SB2000 only requires approximately half the pressure to run compared to the previous high pressure irrigators. This has seen between a 30% - 40% decrease in farm irrigation electricity costs.

The low pressure RAINSPAN SB2000 Boom is far less susceptible to high winds, meaning Brian now has the potential to irrigate day or night, regardless of wind conditions. Essentially doubling his irrigation potential each day (the previous high-pressure system needed to be shut down during high winds experienced each night).

The RAINSPAN SB2000 Boom was found to be between 15% - 25% more efficient with its water application uniformity and distribution compared to the previous high pressure sprinkler irrigators. Simply put, Brian can now irrigate his sugarcane in a more cost-effective manner, utilising the limited water available to him more efficiently.

The RAINSPAN SB2000 is an extremely efficient and reliable low pressure irrigator that when installed and operated correctly saves farmers water, energy, time and money whilst increasing overall farm yields.

Key RAINSPAN SB2000 Boom Irrigator features listed below:

  • Nelson R3000 Rotator Sprinklers were fitted specially to suit the windy conditions, giving a large wetted footprint & better instantaneous application rate
  • Pulls 300m x 4" Snap-Tite Irrigator Hose (Dowdens are the sole authorised Snap-Tite hose dealer in Mackay, Whitsundays & Rockhampton)
  • Gearbox for smooth safe operation specifically designed for the Irrigator - the most efficient in the industry
  • A 93m boom was fitted to the RAINSPAN SB2000 - to seamlessly fit with farms existing lane spacings
  • New Generation Turbines that are the best in the industry
  • Hydraulic Boom Slew & Speed Compensator

The projects scope included supplying and fitting all rails, brackets, lifting chains, concrete pump station lids and non-return valves. Together with the design and installation of Grundfos electronic control panels (Grundfos CU362 Waste Water Controllers) & remote monitoring systems (Grundfos Remote Management [GRM]) which allows for SMS & Email to be sent to relevant site operators alerting them to any faults. The GRM system also allows for system alarms to be reset and pump duties to be modified remotely via any smart-phone or PC. Full product and system descriptions can be viewed below.

The aim of this project was to provide a modern and efficient sewerage pumping system that was energy efficient, reliable, had improved remote monitoring capability and increased level of safety for Dowdens Servicing and onsite technicians. The Dowdens Infield Service Crew began by removing the existing 30-year-old pumps, rails, brackets, lifting chains, heavy concrete lids and control panels. These were replaced with more efficient and reliable Grundfos pumping and monitoring equipment. During installation and commissioning Dowdens had to schedule works to meet the resorts strict operation requirements, ensuring the project proceeded with little to no impact on the resort guests.

The existing concrete lids were damaged and unsafe and needed to be replaced. Dowdens provided 'light lift' aluminium lids with integrated safety grates (pictured below) to minimise the risk of falling into the wet well whilst servicing the pumps. 3 out of the 5 existing control panels were deemed unsafe by Dowdens Electricians and required replacement with new stainless steel panels incorporating the Grundfos CU362 Pump Controllers and Grundfos Variable Frequency Drives on the 2 main pump stations. Dowdens also provided Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas with scheduled servicing of the Grundfos SEV & SE1 pumps; Grundfos CU362 Waste Water Controllers; Grundfos Remote Management [GRM] Systems; Dowdens custom built aluminium lids with safety grates; Stainless steel pump rails; 800kg rated lifting chains & the Backflow protection on wash down taps. The entire project was delivered on time and within budget.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment design philosophy for this project was: Cost Effectiveness - Current Best Practice - Ease of Installation - Simple & Effective Plant Operation - Pump Station Reliability - Advanced Remote Management Capabilities - Reduced Ongoing Maintenance.
