Cannonvale was amongst the hardest hit regions during Cyclone Debbie, so it was no surprise to Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Proserpine Branch to hear Queensland Health had been advised they couldn't be guaranteed potable water supply to their Whitsunday Community Health Centre located in Cannonvale immediately after Cyclone Debbie.
Luckily Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Head Office in Mackay had a portable Ultrafiltration Treatment System available, capable of supplying up to 70,000 litres of potable water per day. Queensland Health and the Whitsunday Community Health Centre in Cannonvale instructed Dowdens Pumping to supply/install the unit immediately on a temporary 'Hire' agreement in-case all mains water supply was lost.
There were two water sources available at the time - the mains water supply or bore water from the Proserpine Hospital. Queensland Health instructed Dowdens to connect the UF Treatment System to the bore water supply, in an effort to remain as self-sufficient as possible post-Cyclone Debbie.
Dowdens Pumping have previously completed numerous bore water filtration systems treating bore water with our own brand of PURION Iron Removal Filters, so this emergency UF Treatment System was quick and easy to install. PURION Iron Removal Filters pre-treat the bore water before running it through the Ultrafiltration System which then doses the filtrate with liquid chlorine to further disinfect.
Once treated Dowdens Pumping manually transported numerous loads of the potable water from the Proserpine Hospital (where the UF System was installed) directly to the Whitsunday Community Health Centre in Cannonvale, where it was stored in a potable water grade storage tank. The treated water was then used to supply the medical centre. The entire supply/installation and commissioning was successfully completed on Saturday 1st of April - only 4 days after Cyclone Debbie had hit.
If you are ever in need of potable water during a storm or emergency contact Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment. Dowdens only require access to a reasonable source of water (bore, dam, creek) and power (generator or mains power) and we can guarantee same day potable water supply, in any situation!

Downer EDI Mining [a division of Downer EDI Limited] has engaged Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Brisbane] to design, manufacture, install and commission a Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay and associated plant treatment equipment at the Meandu Coal Mine located in Tarong, South East Queensland.
Since January 2013 Downer EDI Mining has been providing mining services at Meandu Mine as part of their long-term rolling contract with TEC Coal Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Stanwell Corporation Limited. Downer provides a total mine service to TEC Coal, including mine management, planning, drilling, overburden removal (including dragline and truck-and-shovel operations), coal mining, coal processing, rehabilitation, and maintenance of mobile and fixed plant.
Downer EDI's Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay project tender was won primarily due to Dowdens ability to expertly design / manufacture / install and commission specialised equipment, built in-house & onsite to meet our specific client's unique requirements. With a history of successful installations over the past 15 years within the Queensland Mining Sector, Dowdens is Queensland's premier pumping & water treatment organisation.
Downer's project brief to Dowdens Brisbane was for the design / manufacture / installation and commissioning of a Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay capable of processing a minimum of 5 vehicles per day, with each vehicle taking approximately 1 hour to wash. Meandu Mine required this new Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay to be constructed after the mine had recently purchased a fleet of new generation trucks (KOMATSU 830E Trucks) which are considerably larger in size compared to their existing fleet.
![Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment - Meandu Coal Mine Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay [Tarong, QLD]](cases/Dowdens_Meandu_Mine_CS1.jpg)
To ensure Meandu Mine continued to meet their Environmental Discharge requirements Dowdens designed and incorporated 4x Settling Pits & 3x Oily Water Separators into the construction of the Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay. In Queensland it is a legal requirement for mine sites to treat (separate) any sludge or oil from any waste water coming from a Heavy Vehicle Wash Bay.
Pictured below you can see the 4x large Settling Pits (empty) that are used to catch / store (via gravity feed) waste water from the Wash Pad area. The waste water generally contains some grease, oil, coal fine and soil (mud). The coal fine, mud and other solid particles washed off the trucks is allowed to settle to the bottom of the Settling Pits - the pits are then intermittently emptied by a Bobcat excavator.
The waste water (still containing grease and oil) is pumped from the Settling Pits via progressive cavity pumps into 3 individual 'Oily Water Separators' to remove the remaining contaminants. Once the waste water has been through this treatment stage it is pumped back into Meandu Mine's network of onsite holding dams to be used in other site extraction and processing applications.
Dowdens design philosophy for this project was: Cost Effectiveness - Current Best Practice - Ease of Installation - Simple Plant Operation - Plant Reliability & Reduced Maintenance.
Key Project System Components are listed below (click for component specs):

Grundfos has long been regarded for their high quality and reliable pumps. The Grundfos SCALA2 takes design innovation, comfort and simplicity to the next level and is set to be a game changer in domestic boosting. The NEW Grundfos SCALA2 is a robust, fully integrated, self-priming pump suitable for use from both above and below ground water sources. The compact system features a pump, motor, tank, sensor, drive and non-return valve in one compact unit that is quick and easy to install.
The SCALA2 is an energy efficient pump featuring an integrated speed controller that ensures constant water pressure regardless of variations in demand or inlet pressure. For those living in areas of poor power supply or those that are sometime affected by power outages, the SCALA2 can also be run on a generator, due to its ability to be able to handle varying voltages.
The variable speed controller also matches the power consumption with the required water output, which also helps to conserve energy and reduce your energy bills. To protect the pump and help ensure a long life, the SCALA2 includes a range of protective features. Dry run protection automatically stops operation when the water source runs out, to help prevent damage, and the anti-cycling feature detects any unnatural cycling and alerts the user via the protection indicator on the control panel.
Another unique benefit of the SCALA2 is its quiet operation, thanks to the permanent magnet motor and water cooling technology. The high efficiency motor is significantly quieter than traditional speed-controlled motors and the SCALA2 is cooled by the water it pumps, eliminating the need for a noisy fan. This makes the SCALA2 one of the quietest domestic boosting pumps currently available on the market.
For ease of selection, the SCALA2 suits most domestic pressure boosting applications and is capable of supplying water for small single level homes up to larger multi-storey homes.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Rockhampton branch working closely with Dowdens Pumping - Mackay's Industrial & Fabrication Workshops have successfully designed, manufactured and commissioned a Customised Dewatering Pump System for YANCOAL Australia. YANCOAL own and operate the YARRABEE Coal Mine & Boonal Joint Venture Coal Load Out Facility that is located 40 kilometres north-east of the township of Blackwater, QLD in Central Queensland's Bowen Basin. The Boonal Joint Venture is a coal load out facility located on the Capricorn Highway in Central Queensland, Australia. Coal from both the Yarrabee Coal Mine and Jellinbah Coal Mine are transported via rail link to the Port of Gladstone from the Boonal coal load out facility.
After initial site visits Dowdens Pumping - Rockhampton were able to measure the height and distance required for the dewatering pump system, as well as clearly establish pipe sizes and required flow rates to adequately meet the clients onsite dewatering requirements. This led to the in-house design of the unit by Dowdens Pumping - Mackay's Engineering Department. Once the proposal had been accepted by the client CAD drawings were immediately created and passed onto the Dowdens Industrial Fabrication Workshop.
Boonal Joint Venture's Customised Dewatering Pump System Supply Scope:

As Dowdens Pumping are an authorised FLOWSERVE Pumps Distributor, we were able to quickly and easily size and source a FLOWSERVE Hydro Titan Pump. The Hydro Titan 100x65-250 Pump has a capable duty of 14 l/sec (@ 50m total head) and perfectly matched the clients site requirements. From here Dowdens Industrial Fabrication Workshop welded the skid base together which was then bunded and fully hot dip galvanised. This innovative system utilised a universal coupling, installed between the pump and motor to reduce the chance of miss alignment occurring between the pump and engine.
Dowdens Industrial Fabrication Workshop then proceeded to assemble and mount the 125l diesel fuel tank, Yanmar 3TNV84TEPP-PE 3-Cylinder Diesel Engine, Hydro Titan 100x65-250 Pump and install the universal coupling. Dowdens Electricians then connected the battery and solar array charger module to the canopy [pictured below], whilst mounting the Yanmar 'Engine Protection Unit'. The engine was then taken outside and tested. Once all this was completed it was transported to site where final commissioning was successfully completed.
The complete Boonal Joint Venture's Customised Dewatering Pump System was designed, installed and commissioned by Dowdens Pumping on time and within budget. Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Rockhampton branches design philosophy for this project was: Cost Effectiveness - Innovation - Ease of Installation - Simple & Effective Pump Operation - Engine Longevity - System Reliability & Reduced Ongoing Maintenance.

Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's Brisbane branch has built a strong relationship with Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology (SNP) after more than 25 years of providing high purity water treatment systems / solutions for 22 of their Commercial Testing Pathology laboratories - from as far north as Cairns, down south to Coffs Harbour and everywhere in between. The majority of Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's high purity water treatment systems are used primarily in Sullivan Nicolaides blood testing machines. SNP was formed in 1956 when Dr John Sullivan started a small pathology practice to service local families in and around Brisbane. Dr Nick Nicolaides joined him 18 months later and since then, it has grown to one of the largest and most trusted pathology practices in Australia.
The PROBLEM:Tap or 'town' water contains many substances that if left untreated, can react with the reagents used in controlled laboratory tests, causing positive or negative interference which leads to unreliable test results. Cations such as sodium, calcium, magnesium or iron; anions such as bicarbonate, chloride and sulfate; and other inorganic ions, are commonly found in tap water. A number of other contaminants - such as pyrogens, nucleases, alkaline phosphatase and endotoxins may be present. As they are not harmful for human consumption, they are not thoroughly regulated or tested in the course of South-East Queensland municipalities potable water treatment and distribution. These contaminants are detrimental to experimental / laboratory processes that require precision, high sensitivity and precise instrumental operation.

Water purification is highly dependent upon local (and even site-specific) variations in the make-up of the town / tap water quality, which can differ greatly from place to place. For this reason Dowdens Engineers have designed each and every SNP high purity water treatment system individually, with local and site specific feed water characteristics in mind. The most recent system was installed at SNP's Central Laboratory located in Bowen Hills, QLD.
After careful analysis of the town water being delivered directly to SNP's Bowen Hills Laboratory a turn-key 'looped' treatment system was designed, manufactured and incorporated into SNP's existing Building Maintenance System (BMS). The first stage of this looped system is pre-treatment of the town water via a set of Duplex Carbon Filters and Water Softeners. The water is then fed through Duplex Matten Reverse Osmosis systems and Duplex 10" Deionisers and then stored in four 1,000L loop tanks. This treated water then passes through a set of four Deioniser Polishing Systems which (via a pump) is recirculated into and around the labs as 18 MΩ/cm ultrapure water (UPW).
This 'looped' high purity water treatment system delivers 56,000L of 18 MΩ/cm UPW / day - providing not only the capacity required for SNP's entire Bowen Hills Central Laboratory, but also delivering sufficient redundancy so that during times of service / maintenance the lab and testing machines are never without sufficient UPW to remain operational.
Dowdens Pumping - Brisbane's design philosophy for this project was: Cost Effectiveness - Ease of Installation - Simple & Reliable Plant Operation - System Reliability & Reduction of Ongoing Maintenance Costs. The entire SNP high purity water treatment system was designed, manufactured, installed and commissioned on time and within budget.

Anglo American's Australian Coal division engaged Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Mackay] to deliver 8 specialised underground pumping PODs used for various dewatering applications at their Grosvenor Coal Mine, located 190km southwest of Mackay in Moranbah, Central Queensland.
The Grosvenor mine is a developing underground longwall operation that makes up part of Anglo American's plan to triple hard coking coal production at their Moranbah mine sites. Located next to their existing Moranbah North coal mine, Grosvenor is set to produce up to 5 million tonnes of hard coking coal per annum for export. The Grosvenor mine utilises a 10km overland conveyor to transport high-quality metallurgical coal to the Moranbah North Coal Handling & Preparation Plant.
Construction on Anglo American's $1.95 billion Grosvenor longwall project began back in January 2013, with the development celebrating a number of industry firsts including being the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a tunnel boring machine to develop the drifts, or access tunnels, in coal mine development. Anglo American aimed to have the Grosvenor mine raise the bar for onsite system and production efficiency - making the supply of unique underground POD pumping systems a perfect match for Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's experienced Engineering Department.
Dowdens Engineering Department's comprehensive abilities have been on the radar of many Central Queensland/Bowen Basin mines for some time through direct contact and working with industry leading consulting engineering firms. Dowdens ability to expertly design/manufacture/install and commission unique equipment built to specific client needs, together with a history of successful installations over the past 15 years in the Bowen Basin has positioned the business as Queensland's premier pumping & water treatment organisation.
Underground Pumping PODs are used in mines as part of the site water management process. Mine water is collected from sumps and wet areas by Wilden air operated diaphragm pumps and delivered to PODs where water level sensors then activate the pump and transfer the collected mine water to a mains pump station, underground storage dam or directly out of the mine portal. Mine water is typically dirty with coal fine, rocks and dirt; therefore slurry pumps are needed to handle such water. PODs can be located in hazardous areas and can be fitted with Flame proof motors and motor controllers with PLC (Programmable Logic Controllers) and SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition).
![Anglo American Grosvenor Coal Mine [Moranbah, QLD]](cases/Grosvenor_Pod_CS2.jpg)
The Grosvenor mine site requirements meant each POD needed to have a 200kW power rating. With the site's physical constraints (i.e. the underground mined roof height and width, as well as the site lifting equipment for transporting) meant careful consideration was required for the overhung load whilst transporting this equipment. Capacity of a standard Dowdens POD is 4m3 with a 110kW motor, however with the larger flow rate required to and from the POD meant a 6m3 capacity working volume was needed. Bigger capacity and higher duty equated to a larger size motor and pump, more robust steel framework and additional accessibility for scheduled servicing.
Dowdens standard POD design incorporates a dirty water receiving area. This area, integral to the main hopper (container for collection of bulk material such as rock or soil), ensures particles that are too large for the pump to digest and transport are separated and manually removed periodically ensuring trouble free pumping.
Pumps selected by Dowdens for this harsh duty were Stalker 400SHD model with mechanical seals, seal lubrication and cooling. Motors selected were WEG brand Flameproof mine spec motors. The control for the pumps is a flameproof 200kW model with PLC and HMI (Human Machine Interface) screens. The controller starts and stops the pump, whilst also monitoring for faults and relaying important information to the mine surface via SCADA. Dowdens PODs built for the Grosvenor mine have the ability of easily interchanging the motors/pumps for differing duties. These will be identified as 200kW and 132kW cassettes. To accommodate this change the Main Control Unit (MCU) has the capacity to operate at either 200kW or 132kW with only slight changes to load controls.
The larger size and the flexibility to change the duty, together with Dowdens strategic POD site placement advice has enabled Anglo American less manoeuvring of the POD through development, saving costly underground labour and downtime. Without reliable pumping the mine's production slows/halts causing delays and safety issues which cost the mine many thousands of dollars each day. It was imperative the system worked and was extremely reliable. This project was delivered on time and within budget. Key project system components are listed below:

Arabon Seafoods employed Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Mackay] to deliver a broad acre irrigation system watering their cattle feed pasture located in Bowen, QLD. Arabon Seafoods are a proud Queensland small business specializing in the sale and export of locally sourced live, chilled and frozen seafood.
Dowdens designed an efficient energy and water use irrigation system for Arabon Seafoods that utilises a Valley Two-Wheel-Linear Irrigator - the ideal irrigator for smallholder growers with limited access to electricity - together with a Nelson S3000 Spinner Sprinkler Package, Nelson 110VAC Shut-Off Valve, Valley Autopilot GPS Ready Control Panel and a Yanmar 10kVa 3-Phase Diesel Generator Set.
The Valley Two-Wheel-Linear Irrigator is a fairly standard machine in it's configuration but it's application to Arabon's cattle feed pasture is a departure from local practice. Most irrigation in this region is normally provided by low pressure boom type irrigators which are far less efficient in regards to energy and water consumption when compared to the Valley machine.
The system is required to pump water directly from onsite bores to the Valley Two-Wheel-Linear Irrigator watering 3.5 ha of cattle feed pasture. The irrigator's purpose is to provide water to a 'baleable' hay crop which is periodically onsold to local graziers as stock feed. The installation of a Valley linear irrigator has greatly reduced the number of irrigation runs that Arabon Seafoods has previously undertaken with their smaller boom type irrigator to water the same area of crop. Valley Two-Wheel-Linears deliver the ability to easily tow or swing the machine around to cover more acres.
Valley's 'easy to operate' Valley Autopilot GPS Ready Control Panel has enabled other Arabon Seafoods personnel to operate the irrigator which had always proved difficult in the past using a more dated irrigator. The GPS Ready Valley Autopilot Control Panel allows linears to automatically perform functions similar to a center pivot. The AutoPilot Linear measures the lateral position and direction of travel of the linear, allowing functions to be easily programmed to run automatically.Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Mackay] are the sole Valley Irrigation Master Dealers for the Mackay / Whitsunday region enabling the best possible pricing and unmatched product support for all of our customers.

Arabon Seafoods contacted Dowdens Mackay in mid-2015 and requested a site visit and quote. Within a week the Dowdens Ag Sales Team were onsite taking measurements and discussing options with the business owners. A system was designed to suit the area and application, and the quote was delivered. Arabon Seafoods was happy with the design and pricing and instructed Dowdens they would budget for this system in 2016.
Fast forward to mid-2016, working closely with the business owners Dowdens had successfully refined the quote and sourced all materials to be supplied. The purchase order arrived with Dowdens in late May 2016 - the irrigator was delivered to site on Friday 24th of June. The installation commenced Monday 27th of June and the machine was fully operational and commissioning was completed by Wednesday 29th of June.
Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment's design philosophy for this project was: Cost Effectiveness - Current Best Practice - Ease of Installation - Simple & Effective System Operation - System Reliability & Delivering Reduced Ongoing Maintenance Requirements.
The entire project was overseen and managed by Brett Hayes from the Dowdens Pumping & Water Treatment [Mackay] Agricultural Sales Team.
